Hungary Uprisings (1956)
Hungary had been controlled since by Russia since 1945; but with Stalin's death in 1953, brought hope of freedom and change. The uprising started as a student protest, who demanded that Imre Nagy would be the Prime Minister, election of a new Party leadership by national congress, withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary, free elections, and free press. The movement gathered steam attracting thousands to join in. The protest moved to the radio station where they tried to get their demands broadcasted ,but were fired upon by the AVH (State Security Police). This is the spark that turned a peaceful demonstrations into a uprising. Revolt spread quickly across the country with militias forming to fight the AVH and Soviet troops. They over-threw these forces and established their own legitimate government Imry Nagy at the head. For five days there was freedom with the new government introducing democracy, freedom of speech, and freedom of religion. On November 3, 1956 Nagy announced that Hungary was going to with draw from the Warsaw pact. However the next day the Soviet Union sent 1,000 tanks into Hungary. over 2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops were killed. The resistance lasted six days before the Soviets took control. The Hungarian government only lasted eight-teen days.
